Hi! I’m Ryan. I’ve been doing lab automation for the last decade and change (chemistry and bacteria) in a lab but now get to work with a wider range of labs as part of the HighRes Bio team. 3D printing is another passion and I’m happy to see that here too.

Hi All,
I’m Morten, I have been active for some time now here, mainly in the Tecan section. So I guess its time to introduce myself.

I’m a Laboratory Automation Specialist at the University of Copenhagens Forensic Genetics Department - I guess you could say I program robots that fight crime :grinning:
My background is in bioinformatics but also hold a degree as a Lab Tech.
I mainly work with Tecan Fluent but was also unlucky enough to have tried “Instinct V” for Hamilton Vantage - few people will know about that, for good reasons…

Apart from that, I’m very interested in experimental design and Bayesian optimization.
See a totally real photo of me below:

Hi Everyone.

I’m Dug Rowland. I am a research scientist at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa) in a multifunctional lab focusing on yeast expression systems in the university Microbiology department.

I have been newly introduced to lab automation as our laboratory had a Tecan Fluent delivered and installed in January. I have been through the training but I still have a lot to learn.

Our Fluent is the 780 with airFCA and RGA. On the deck we have a BIoShake, a Pickolo colony picker, a SciRobotics petri-plater and an Infinite M Plex plate reader. Everything is in a Bio 2 box.

I look forward to gaining new ideas and collaborating where I can.

Hi everyone! I work for a genomics reagent supplier, and my job is to help customers automate our kits on whatever liquid handling hardware they have. As such, I’ve gotten varying degrees of experience working with Biomek, Fluent, Sciclone/Zephyr, Bravo, and QIAgility. I’ll stay semi-anonymous here because I don’t know how well my employer would take having their name bandied about publicly. If anybody needs an automation guy in the Atlanta area, I’m looking for a home lab so that I can ditch the road warrior lifestyle and pay more attention to my kids.

This has been my job for about 3 years now, so while I’ve got a lot of happy customers under my belt I can’t claim to be a master. One of my biggest takeaways from the time is that you shouldn’t be overly intimidated to try to learn a new system. Liquid handling interfaces are like programming languages in that, with some notable exceptions, they all do roughly the same thing in roughly the same ways. If you can set aside a few weeks to learn the quirks and syntax, you can probably make the robot do what you want.

Hi all!

My name is Niklas and I work as a LabDev Specialist at a genetics lab. We recently got a Hamilton Star and a Starlet and my life recently has been revolving around learning to understand Venus. I attended the Basic Training course last week and got pretty excited about the possibilities with these instruments. Which is not to say that I am not feeling pretty confused atm

I was very happy to find this forum and I expect to be around here quite a bit asking a lot of very basic questions, so please bear with me

Hello,

I just found this forum and I am excited to join! I am the VP of Sequence Biotech. We are the inventors / manufacturers of the Sorenson Benchtop pipettor. This is a semi-automated benchtop pipettor which loads of you work at firms that have/had them.

I would like to branch out into the fully automated market and hopefully I can gain insight on user experience from this forum.

In my spare time I enjoy building cars. Currently I am building a 1988 Porsche 944 with a LS2 motor. Loads of design people in here so I would love to pick some brains on 3D printing as well. We have a formlab 3D printer in house.

Hello everyone,
My name is Shelvin, and I’m a robotics engineer with a keen interest in lab automation. I have limited experience in the lab automation space with NIH/NCATS (rockville, MD) where I built a novel automated high-density storage system for Hamilton user racks, alongside developing some other features for the system to be human- and robot-friendly (Biosero). I’m eager to contribute my skills to the life sciences field and learn from this community.

Hi all,
I’m Harrison, I work as a Scientist at Abcam in Cambridge (UK). My background is in immunology, flow cytometry and imaging. I got into automation 2.5 years ago as part of a very small team developing a Biomek i7 platform to perform flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry experiments. We have recently acquired a Hamilton STAR for another project and these forums have already been very helpful as I teach myself Venus and build protocols.

Hi everyone,

I’m Mauro and I work as Automation Specialist at Agilent (home based in Bologna, Italy).

My background is chemistry and magnetic resonance, but I have been programming computers since I was a kid (too many years ago…) and scientific machines since I was a fresher. Before joining Agilent I have been assistant professor of organic chemistry in a food science department at the local university, dealing with the magnetic resonance characterization of water in foods.

I am happy that I found this forum!

Hi All,

I’m Chris Elhosni, and I cut my teeth on lab automation at the start of the COVID pandemic in 2020, and have found myself focused on NGS assays since then! I haven’t been to SLAS yet, and hoping to change that this year.

I’m interested in finding ways to clap my hands and make qualified systems appear out of thin air. That behind-the-scenes planning and plumbing, and making automation itself more scalable and accessible, is what I find fulfilling (maybe even enjoyable sometimes).

Hi Everyone,

My name is Xianghua Chu, and I’m based in Germany. I hold a PhD in engineering and recently completed an MBA. I have worked as a Senior Automation Engineer for over five years, with extensive hands-on experience on the Hamilton STAR and VANTAGE platforms. I also developed a dual-arm robotic system for fully automated sample preparation workflows.

Recently, I’ve been exploring ways to integrate AI into lab automation — including using large language models (LLMs) to automatically generate Hamilton Venus methods.

I’m excited to join this forum! In the past, I often had to troubleshoot automation challenges on my own, so I truly value the opportunity to exchange ideas and collaborate with other professionals in this field.

Looking forward to learning from and contributing to the community.

Best regards,
Xianghua
