Biomek 5 Software Installation on Windows 11

Has anyone attempted this successfully yet?

Running into lots of issues with SQL Server and the software installer recognizing the database as the correct version and service pack.

Beckman is not super helpful as they don’t condone user installation of the software on the controller. As I understand it, the W11 install is not validated yet so they can limit any technical responses to “this isn’t ready yet”.

@evwolfson I have version 5 on my windows 11 laptop. It works without issue. We can try remoting into your computer to see if I can fix it? Let me know if you are interested and I can give my info in the chat.

My IT would have an aneurysm if I asked them to have someone remote in but it’s a good thought

Do you know if it was a fresh install on W11 or on an existing install that upgraded to W11? I have successfully done the upgrade but can’t figure out the fresh install when the system is already on Windows 11.

If a fresh install on 11, which version of SQL do you have installed?

I can try on my laptop - it’s a clean windows 11 install. What errors are you seeing? Got any screenshots/logs?

The error is this

This appears with or without SQL installed. I’ve tried versions 2014, 2014SP2, and 2014SP3 but the installer doesn’t appear to recognize the installation state, existing or not.

Were you able to solve the installation problem? I’m having the same issue.
I’ve already tried uninstalling the SQL server I had on my computer and also tried installing it manually, but I still can’t get the Biomek software to install.

I just installed this on a Win 11 laptop and did not see this, @evwolfson.

Matt no longer works at BC - disregard @mgilson_beckman are you able to assist?

Good to know that it does work. I never heard back from Beckman about unsanctioned fixes for this, nor was I able to continue troubleshooting

For my case, I attribute this to the laptop being locked down too much by our IT department and just not being able to have admin over the install process. I wonder if this is the root of all my issues - probably some msi couldn’t run or was getting pushback from system security.

Finally, after several attempts, I managed to install it!
First, I uninstalled all the SQL components normally.
But even so, some folders remained on my system after the uninstallation:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server

So I downloaded IObit Unlocker and was able to force the deletion of these files. (IObit Unlocker, Solution for "undelete files or folders" Problems on Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP, 10 - IObit)
I restarted the computer, installed SQL, restarted again, and then installed Biomek.

(In one of the attempts, I used Geek Uninstaller, but it didn’t work — only IObit Unlocker did. In fact, with Geek, it deleted some files without properly uninstalling the software, and I even had to reinstall it just so I could uninstall it completely.)

Very interesting! I used geek as well but figured it was a dead end when it didn’t work for me. I’ve got my IT on-site so I’ll give this a try tomorrow and report back.

Do you happen to have the build # for the SQL Server 2014 installer you used? Or was this the default installation in the Biomek Software installer?

The SQL that came with the Biomek was SQLEXPR.EXE (999,579 KB file), but that one doesn’t work.
I downloaded the one they recommend when the installation error occurs: http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/A/5/2A5260C3-4143-47D8-9823-E91BB0121F94/SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.EXE (1,124,257 KB file)
