Error when teaching positions

Hello all, we are currently teaching positions, and this error has popped up twice when we are trying to select the 1000uL channel. I have never seen this error, and was wondering if anyone could help us figure out what is occurring. Thank you!

Hi @automation_viome

Sorry to hear that your teaching runtime is presenting issues. Some additional materials in and information will be needed to make an assessment remotely.

Most helpful would be a communication trace from the day in which this error occurred, with a heads up to the time the teaching UI was launched from the deck editor. Is this occurring on STAR or VANTAGE? The communication trace would be found at:

../Hamilton/Logfiles/HxTcpIpBdzComm2025MMDD.trc for VANTAGE
../Hamilton/Logfiles/HxUsbComm2025MMDD.trc for STAR

You can upload the requested file to the following upload folder (password: Hamilton25)

Some other general follow-up questions:

  • Does this error only present when selecting 1mL channels for teaching using this particular decklayout? Or is this widespread across the installation?
  • Does this only occur when launching the teaching UI for 1mL channel teaching of sample tube carriers? Or does this issue present with other labware?
  • Does this occur if you 1mL change the channel assigned for teaching? This is set in the instrument settings of system configuration editor.

Thanks.

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your response. The issue is intermittent and not limited to a particular layout. I believe it occurred about 4–5 times yesterday. We only use the 1 mL teaching needle, and I’ll try changing the channel to see if that helps. I’ve uploaded the requested file for you. Thanks again for your help!

Thanks for providing the communication trace. Without the context of when these instances occurred, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what is going on, but I do see some unusual connection activity.

Can you specify precisely when this error window presents? is it right after selecting the 1mL channel as the teaching tool option? Or is this after the needle has been picked up?

From your screen shot above, it looks like you are running on a Windows 11 OS. Can you confirm which version of VENUS you are running?

Thanks.

Hi Nick, we are using Windows 11 and Venus 6. We get the error before the channel picks up the teaching needle.

We think the error is from the front cover because when we go to start the method, and we are using a magnet to leave the front cover open to see inside of the liquid handler the machine throws an error that says “Cannot switch loading light on/off”. We are able to work around this by not using the magnets when teaching positions or when starting the method.

I think I know what this error is @NickHealy_Hamilton @automation_viome !

There is a few second lag between when you hit the “Move Probe” button and when the machine actually goes to get the 1ml teaching tip. If you accidentally hit the “Move Probe” button during this lag because you a) think it didn’t work the first time, or b) are trigger happy, you get an error.

I fall into the a category and see the error frequently.
