We are looking to upgrade our computers from Windows 10 to Windows 11. We have instruments running both Venus 4 and Venus 6. Will this upgrade require re-installing Venus for either version or are there any known issues? Thanks!
I would recommend contacting the service team from Hamilton first. From what I’ve seen in the lab software field, critical updates like this can be risky. In some cases, it’s strongly advisable to fully uninstall and reinstall the software rather than updating in place. Also, keep in mind that your current software version may not be officially supported on Windows 11. Before proceeding, reach out to Hamilton — they can confirm whether your version is compatible with Win 11 and advise you on the safest upgrade path.
The best way to go about this is to spin up a separate computer in tandem with the ones that are functional. So while you are testing, installing, and migrating you can always go back to the working system. With the inexpensive nature of computers these days this is a safe bet. Contacting Hamilton to get a lay of the land is also not a bad idea.
Hello,
If the upgrade to Windows 11 is from the native update tool to your PC then you should not have any issues with Venus 6 once the upgrade to 11 is complete. But if the upgrade to 11 is from an image install then you may run into issues depending on what all is involved in the imaging of the PC.
We do have customers in the field who have elected to upgrade their PCs to Windows 11 because the Windows Update tool was routinely prompting them to do so. Thus far I have heard of no issues if this happens with Venus 5 or 6 installed.
That being said, Venus 6 was introduced was for compatibility with customers obtaining WIndows 11 PCs earlier on. So while your methods may work on your Venus 4 setups, there will be many features that will be broken (like the liquid class editor) once those Venus 4 setups are on Windows 11. My suggestion will be that these Venus 4 systems will need a software upgrade/install.
